St Mark's Parish - Inala
Brisbane West Deanery  - Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane - Australia
Columbarium & Memorial Plaques
What is a Columbarium?
It is a wall of niches to hold the ashes of our loved ones.  We have built a Columbarium behind our St Mark's Church.  The Columbarium was funded by Fr Frank Moynihan's legacy to our parish.  It has been constructed for our parishioners and their families.

The Catholic attitude to cremation
The Catholic Church's attitude to cremation has changed in recent years.  Burial remains the recommended practice.  However, if cremation is chosen, this is still permissible.  The only prohibition is that cremation must not be chosen as a way of denying Christian teaching-or for reasons that are contrary to Christian teaching (Canon:1176), such as denying the belief in the resurrection of the body (Catholic Catechism: 2301).

Inurnment of Ashes
At the completion of the funeral, the body is cremated.  A short time later the Crematorium will contact the family and advise them that the ashes are ready to be inurned.  The family will then contact our Parish to arrange for the final inurnment of the ashes in the Columbarium.  The ashes will be placed in our approved container, and then placed in the wall of the Columbarium.

Is there a Ceremony?
Yes, the family will contact the Parish Priest to arrange a service to inurn the ashes and pray for the repose of the soul of the person who has died.

Upkeep and ongoing maintenance
The Columbarium will be maintained by the Parish in a clean and dignified condition.  Family members and friends will of course be welcome to visit the Columbarium at any time.  The Parish will remove any objects that the Parish considers detracts from the beauty of the Columbarium.

What is the Memorial Rock?
Our parish has also placed rocks for affixing Memorial Plaques in memory of deceased persons.  They are principally for persons who are already deceased, and where remains of that person are inurned, scattered or buried elsewhere.

Plaque Design
Columbarium and Memorial Rock Plaques will be of standard design, and provided by the Parish.  The words and symbols (motifs) shall be discussed, but shall be in accordance with the guidelines of the Parish.

Please note: The size of the plaque for the Memorial Rocks will be approximately one half the size of the Columbarium Plaque.
